The heart of the SonicSampDrill system consists of two excentres that are driven by two small and fully synchronized high-speed (10,000 rpm) hydro-motors . The high-frequency vibrations (up to 180 Hz) generated by these excenters are transferred directly to the drilling rods. The drill head is suspended in such a way that minimal forces are applicable on mast and rig. Noise is limited too.
The created vibration causes the soil directly surrounding drive cone and casing to behave like a fluid. This process, called liquefaction, greatly reduces friction so that the Sonic equipment penetrates sandy, gravely soils and to some extend, clay. The fluidity of the soil, caused by vibration is enough to limit friction, but is too small (0.1-5mm) to disturb a sample, which results in soil samples of very high quality.
The schemes below show available possibilities and examples of rigs supplied in the past.
